Looking for all the technical mumbo jumbo needed to compete? Athlete waivers, tax forms, refund, cancellation and event policies are found on our Athlete Forms & Policies page.
Athletes should allow ample time to park in Vail, pick up their bib at Main Reg in Golden Peak, and make their way to the event start. We recommend getting to Vail NO LESS THAN 1 HOUR before your competition is scheduled to start.
There’s some serious coin up for grabs, like over $120K. Payouts vary by event and category. Check out specific event pages for detailed prize information.
All top finishing athletes who will receive prize money must return a completed 2021 W-9 or 8233 form to GoPro Mountain Games organizers via one of the following methods:
- Drop it off at GoPro Mountain Games Event Registration in Golden Peak during the Mountain Games
- Mail to: Vail Valley Foundation, Attn: Peggy Wolfe, PO Box 6550, Avon, CO 81620
- Email to: prizemoney@vvf.org. International competitors must also submit a completed wire information form in addition to their 8233 form.
Prize money checks will be mailed within 45 days of receiving a completed W-9 or 8233 form and wire information form (if applicable). W-9 or 8233 must be turned in by November 1, 2021, after which we will consider your prize money sum a donation to the VVF.
The 2021 GoPro Mountain Games will not be exactly the same as years past. Differences include:
- L.L.Bean Gear Town will feature fewer tents and sponsor activations than years past.
- Spectators may be limited in capacity within venue footprints and may be required to wear face coverings when within venue footprint boundaries.
- Athletes may be asked to wear face coverings when not actively competing.
- No climbing events will take place this year.
- No Steep Creek Championship event will take place this year – instead, the Pacifico Gore IV Kayak Challenge will send racers down a lively stretch of Gore Creek in Vail.
- No slackline competitions will take place this year.
- No Outdoor Reels film series.
What will be the same?
Athletes, art, music and mountains. That’s the mantra of the GoPro Mountain Games and it’s true again in 2021.
In the daytime, expect live music and art in the streets, a celebratory atmosphere, thousands of mountain athletes competing for glory, a whole lot of happy diving dogs, and more during the day.
In the evening, athletes will have the first crack at tickets to three nights of live concerts at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. Details to come.
The rumors are no joke. We live the high life up here in the Rocky Mountains. Getting in plenty of training prior to competing at over 8,150 feet and taking extra precautions with hydration is a must.
According to some really smart people at the Institute for Altitude Medicine, plan on drinking an additional 1-1.5 liters of water daily when at high elevations. Increasing your carbohydrate intake is also recommended – lucky for you there are plenty of pizza spots in Vail. If you’re questioning your ability to compete consult your doctor, or mom… one of them usually knows best.
